Our Visitors Cathedral Stories

  • Irish Family Makes Connection First Time Since WWII

Our father was in the Merchant Marines during WWII. We knew he had died in 1941 "somewhere in Canada" and had been buried in a "St. Joseph's Cemetery" somewhere in Canada. Our mother (who passed away in 1991) and we spent years wondering where he had been laid to rest and, if he had had a Catholic burial. After much research, we traveled to Saint John and found his gravesite! Msgr. Henneberry took us to his gravesite at St. Joseph's Cemetery and told us his funeral had been at the Cathedral! (Sisters & Brother Malone, Co. Wicklow, Ireland)

  • We Loved the New Visitors Information Center!

My wife and I visited the Visitors Information Centre Sep 7, 2016. We learned so much history and information about the Cathedral, its builders and plans for the restoration! I was born in Saint John and was raised in St. John the Baptist Parish. My father studied as a Redemptorist brother with St. Peter's Church. The director at the Visitors Centre gave us directions to St. Peter's and also helped us get in touch with the staff of the Archives. Super helpful Visitors Centre! (Bernie Murphy, Sudbury, Ontario)

  • I am grateful for Saint John's Cathedral

I have been a member of the Catholic Community in Saint John for over 20 years and have attended Mass at the Cathedral many times including Special Occasions. I have experienced Christmas Eve Mass, Good Friday and Easter Vigil Services, Funerals, and Baccalaureate Graduation Celebrations with 2 of my Children as they Graduated from St Malachy's Memorial High School. Whenever I am in the Cathedral I feel God's presence around me and I am grateful that we have this beautiful church. (Joanne Fellows, Saint John)
